NOZZLE PATTERNS FOR HIGHWAY GUIDERAIL APPLICATION
(Field Observation Note #4)

When side mounted, as shown in this photo, the RADIARC® SPRAYER with the Vertical Actuator mounted on the stainless steel RADIARM™ permits the spraying of fence lines, roadsides, embankments and other hard to reach areas

The RADIARC Sprayer can be used to apply contact, translocated, and residual herbicides and plant growth regulators to control vegetation under highway guiderails and around highway delineators and signposts.

Horizontal or vertical RADIARC® patterns may be used. Four to six nozzle orifices are usually sufficient to apply the typical two to six foot wide swath required.

HORIZONTAL PATTERNS:

Horizontal patterns usually require the ability to tilt the RADIARC downward 10 to 20 degrees from the horizontal. The Vertical Actuator will allow continual adjustment of the angle to meet varying truck to swath distances. The Swivel Mount can be used to set the RADIARC spray head to a fixed angle. A horizontal pattern will apply some of the pattern behind the guiderail support posts. A low mounting height allows application of the pattern below the rail on most guiderail designs.

To apply 25 gallons per acre on a three foot swath at 10 mph, use six .045 nozzles, three in each spray head, mounted in the center of each spray head. Apply at 20 psi to give the required 1.5 gallons per minute. Consult the RADIARC calibration table for other speeds or volumes per acre. Use the gallons per minute per nozzle to determine the number of nozzles required to give the desired flow rate. Insert nozzle plugs in all unused nozzle positions.

VERTICAL PATTERNS:

Application of a vertical pattern will give a sharp, uniform edge at the beginning and end of each swath, and is especially useful for delineator posts and similar structures. A Vertical Actuator will also be useful for vertical patterns, since the distance from the road to the swath is often variable. (See TYPICAL VERTICAL NOZZLE PATTERN and VERTICAL NOZZLE PATTERNS FOR GRASS GROWTH REGULATION & SEEDHEAD CONTROL.)

To apply 25 gallons per acre on a three foot swath at 10 mph, use three .070 nozzles or two .085 nozzles operated at 20 psi. Other nozzle combinations may be used to provide a three foot swath depending on the distance from the spray head to the treated area. Insert nozzle plugs in all unused nozzle positions.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Flow rates on the calibration chart are only guides to flow. Use a calibrated flow meter or catch the output from the selected nozzle pattern to determine the actual flow rate. For accurate results, make a final calibration using the herbicide combination being applied.
